HISTORY This Regatta has been in existence for some sixteen years.  Usually held in the first or second week of March, and formerly called the All Exuma Regatta.  In 2003 the CSA took over the management and renamed the regatta the New Providence Challenge Cup.

PURPOSE

The NP Challenge Cup has a three-fold purpose, which it has maintained since inception.

  1. To allow Family Island Associations to raise funds from the crowds who flock to Montagu to assist with their projects in their respective islands.  Only ASSOCIATIONS are given stalls to sell on Montagu during the Regatta and preference is given to Family Island and Regatta Associations
  1. To give the Sailing Sloops an opportunity to tryout and trim their boats before the National Family Island Regatta in April.  When the Regatta began, there were no competitive Regattas held in Nassau to test oneself against the competition and many boats could not afford to go to any other Regattas before Georgetown.
  1. To give Nassauvians – resident and tourist alike, a taste of the Regatta experience and perhaps encourage them to travel to a Regatta on a Family Island.

PARTICIPATION Since the beginning the average number of Sloops attending has been eight (8) in each class.  It has grown significantly now and usually all boats resident in Nassau participate in addition to some which come in from the Family Is.

Bacardi Company, Burns House and Bristol Cellars have at one time or the other given substantial sponsorship.
